Alaska wildlife viewing eco-tours on Walrus Islands
Spring and summer seabirds (kittiwakes, murres, puffins, cormorants, parakeet auklets, pigeon guillemots) by the thousands breed along the island's shores. Walk to within a few yards of horned and tufted puffins. See huge bull walrus lounge on the beaches. Seals, sea lions, legions of seabirds and raptors live in undisturbed splendor. People are so scarce even the foxes have no fear so feed and play throughout the island slopes. Although it's very rare, we're always watchful for the gray whales which normally migrate through this area earlier in the season. These small Southwest Alaska islands annually host the largest land-based walrus haulout in the Western Hemisphere. In the spring, for days at a time, 500 to 10,000 male walruses may be seen basking on the rocky beaches of Round Island.
